Twenty-Two

There is not an empty seat to watch the game between Lincoln High and Cedarvale Collegiate for the state title. Even the principal, who is notoriously frugal, finds room in his budget for Lincoln’s players and cheerleaders to be outfitted with spanking new uniforms.

Crisp-looking jerseys and matching shorts in the school colors of burgundy and white work their magic on the team’s morale. Everyone at Lincoln feels like a winner today.

Cedarvale has enjoyed an impressive string of victories. Their players are intimidating. Even so, Bruce could run circles around them if he were unconstrained. Lincoln needs to win—but with Jack taking the credit. Pulling this off will be tricky.

Scouts from across the country have come to discover fresh talent. With so much at stake, the tension in the air is as thick as a London fog.

Bruce is careful to set up plays that make Jack look like the hero. Rachel can see what Bruce is doing and admires him greatly for it. On this important date, Jack comes through with his best game. He resists the temptation to look up at the scouts, though they are on his mind the entire time.

The score is nail-bitingly close—a coin toss right up until the final few minutes. As the buzzer is about to sound, Jack dodges his guard and sends the ball swooshing through the net with a classic hook shot.

Lincoln just won by two points!

In the midst of thunderous applause and a standing ovation, the cheerleaders perform their well-rehearsed routines.

Three scouts have their eye on Jack Campbell and are prepared to make an offer for him. From a distance, Bruce gives his friend the thumbs-up. Rachel hangs back too. This moment belongs to Jack.

Bruce points at his Nikes and says to Rachel, “It was the shoes.”

“Absolutely,” she agrees, “the only reason!”

With that comment, they both burst into laughter. If ever a day was perfect, this would be it. Bruce cannot remember the last time he was so entirely happy.
